Maggie and her partner live in Shoreditch with their 6-year-old daughter and 2.5-year-old son. Maggie works in an international charity and her partner works in IT in London. We spoke to them at the end of a four-night, four-day holiday at Villa Pia.

How did you hear about Villa Pia?

A friend of mine mentioned that they had heard of a family-centred holiday spot near Perugia, called Villa Pia. I Googled it and looked around the web site thinking that it ticked a lot of boxes for us. I looked around online, on MumsNet and BabyFriendly BoltHoles and read so many positive comments that we decided to book our holiday at Villa Pia.

What are your top three favourite attributes of your holiday so far?

First, the amount of outdoor space. Our oldest is able to run around and explore independently in a controlled and safe space. The kids can actually run and play at will — they are absolutely free to go off, play and investigate.

Next, the way we can leave the “kit” behind. There is a playroom filled with toys, the courtyard is filled with toys, there is an indoor soft play area, games room, pools, sandbox playground, tennis courts … we did not have to pack anything to keep the kids entertained.

Lastly, we have really been able to relax without having to pack the kids away into a creche or kids club. If you need a holiday where you want to have a break from your kids, Villa Pia might not be the best choice. However, we have spent quality family time together, it’s been a positive and bonding holiday. We have struck a good balance at Villa Pia with it being kid-friendly and deeply relaxing.

Did you have any concerns before booking your holiday at Villa Pia?

Our main concern booking the holiday at Villa Pia was that it would be too British. My husband was worried that we would sit around the pool chatting about crowding on the Northern Line, or eat “Britalian” dinners. We have been pleasantly surprised with how diverse the guests actually are, it is very international. We also feel like we have had a quintessential Italian holiday, with local foods, wines, local chefs preparing local dishes and sharing local customs. We were initially put off that it would be less authentic, but having everyone speak English has made it more accessible and more engaging.

Would you recommend Villa Pia to your friends with young children?

Villa Pia gave us a great balance for a great holiday. The price was very reasonable and the quality of the food and drink was outstanding. The kids ate healthfully, it was fantastic value. So yes!
