For all the foodies out there who’d like to learn For all the foodies out there who’d like to learn more about the harvest traditions of Umbria, join us this autumn with @idlermagazine for The Umbrian Harvest Retreat.

Saturday 31 October - Saturday 7 November 2026

We’ll pick chestnuts, cook on the fire, roll homemade pasta, see olives cold-pressed into extra virgin olive oil, visit an ancient pear orchard, go truffle hunting, wine tasting and much more …

Lots to chew over, including lectures by Tom Hodgkinson and Guy Standing.

Tom Hodgkinson is the founder and editor of The Idler and the bestselling author of How to be Idle (Penguin, 2007) and Brave Old World (Penguin, 2012). He will discuss themes from Brave Old World with husbandry lessons from Virgil’s Georgics, Epicurean philosophy, Columella and William Cobbett.

Guy Standing has held professorships at Bath, London and Monash universities, was a programme director in the UN’s International Labour Organization and has advised many international bodies and governments on social and economic policies. He co-founded the Basic Income Earth Network and is now its co-president. He is the author of a number of books on the commons including Plunder of the Commons: A Manifesto for Sharing Public Wealth (Penguin, 2019).

Georgia Heath will lead yoga and still life sessions.

Your host will be Idler Academy Director Victoria Hull.

A Haven for Stories
Saturday 17 October - Saturday 24 October 2026

@ahavenforstories is back for its 5th year this coming October! It’s a chance to meet other creatives, be inspired in the morning writing workshops and receive valuable feedback from three talented writers.

Tobias Jones is the author of The Dark Heart of Italy and a regular contributor to the Guardian and the British and Italian press. He’s written and presented documentaries for BBC and RAI.

Elise Valmorbida is an Italian Australian author who won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award 2019 for her acclaimed fourth novel, The Madonna of the Mountains. She’s recently published The Happy Writing Book, a guide to creative writing and wellbeing, inspired by 20+ years of experience as writer-teacher. @elisevalmorbida

Clare Pollard’s sixth collection of poetry with Bloodaxe is Lives of the Female Poets. Her poem ‘Pollen’ was shortlisted for the Forward Prize. Clare also writes in many other genres: her play The Weather was performed at the Royal Court Theatre. Clare’s second children’s novel, The Othernauts, is forthcoming in 2026 with Picadilly Press. @poetclare
