The Idler – Philosophy Retreat

Week 1: 27th April 2024 – 4th May 2024
Week 2: 14th September 2024 – 21st September 2024

In the company of the Idler’s editor Tom Hodgkinson and Idler Academy director Victoria Hull, this Idler Retreat will be exploring the Philosophy of the Romantics. We’ll be entertained by special guest poet Murray Lachlan Young. We’ll read, walk, loaf and feast together. There will be walks in the Umbrian hills and trips to local medieval towns. Mark Vernon will explore how Romantic philosophy first emerged as a response to the scientific revolution and Enlightenment. Tom Hodgkinson will discuss idling in Romantic poetry, from Blake’s horror of Moloch and the machine to Wordsworth and Coleridge’s revolutionary Lyrical Ballads to Keats’s praise of indolence.
