The Idler Philosophy Retreat at Villa Pia

Dates: 27th April 2024 to 4th May 2024 & 14th September 2024 to 21st September 2024

In the company of the Idler’s editor Tom Hodgkinson and Idler Academy director Victoria Hull, this Idler Retreat will be exploring the Philosophy of the Romantics. We’ll be entertained by special guest poet Murray Lachlan Young. We’ll read, walk, loaf and feast together. There will be walks in the Umbrian hills and trips to local medieval towns. Mark Vernon will explore how Romantic philosophy first emerged as a response to the scientific revolution and Enlightenment. Tom Hodgkinson will discuss idling in Romantic poetry, from Blake’s horror of Moloch and the machine to Wordsworth and Coleridge’s revolutionary Lyrical Ballads to Keats’s praise of indolence. Guitar Breaks

Running in June and October this year, Guitar Breaks offers bespoke retreats for guitar players and enthusiasts. Indulge your six-string passion with a roster of special guest instructors. This year we are featuring workshops with some wonderful guitar players, including the extremely talented Chris Buck. The Tuscan Table – A Writers Retreat

Dates: 31st August to 7th September 2024

No one is a writer until they start. Do you find that you’re distracted by the challenges of life and keep putting writing off? Us too. That’s why we come to the table. Whatever your projects, level of experience or background, there’s a place set just for you. Give your inner critic a week off and come to Italy to transform your writing. You’ll be guided by award-winning creatives, including two Sunday Times bestselling authors. Around the Tuscan Table, you’ll participate in group workshops and get one-to-one support. The villa has libraries and plenty of cosy corners as well as acres of beautiful grounds to take your imagination for a walk. Workshops will cover core areas of storytelling such as navigating the perils of life-writing, finding your voice and unlocking creativity. The week will also include plenty of personal writing time to explore new ideas or take an existing project to the next level. Your mentors, Rhik Samadder, Sophie Heawood and Adam Shakinovsky are all writers who have collectively worked across journalism, memoir, feature film, stage and television. Choir Course & Finding your Solo Voice: Singing Courses in Tuscany

Do you sing in choirs? Have you ever wanted to explore your solo voice or would like to combine a relaxing holiday in Italy with group of other singers? Join classically trained singer Jane Haughton (Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne) and professional pianist Howard Beach in the beautiful Tuscan countryside for a week of group choral workshops, solo classes and individual coaching in a relaxed and nurturing environment. This year we will be running a combined week of Finding Your Solo Voice with a Choir Course exploring a mixture of Italian and English repertoire. The Idler Philosophy Retreat at Villa Pia
